Detroit River 4/27/2020

Had and unusual but great trip to the Detroit River jigging for walleye. Unusual for us is getting to the launch at 9:30am as opposed to daybreak along with using the Belanger Park launch rather than our favorite at Del Ray. The Launch was packed, we ended up getting a parking spot only because someone had already left – we assumed with their limit.

We motored north and set up on the US side in the muddy water side of the mudline. The HDS Live coupled with the Airmar transducer gave me a super clear image at 40 MPH – which is exactly what I was looking for. We started jigging at 10am and hit a fish within minutes. We drifted just south of the power lines and went back up river a tad north of our first stop and set up again. By 11:05am we had our 12 fish. They averaged around 19 inches each.

We ended up fishing for a while longer trying a few different nuances (like north of the bridge or in the clear water that most boats were in), but had to come back to the mud to get more bites. We started and ended with the same 2 jigs (yellow/pink head white body & root beer head bubble gum body).

We got back to Belanger before 1pm and lots of boats were waiting to get out couple with people launching. There were a lot of boats at 2-rocks and on the mudline across from the steel mill so we spent an extra hour hitting both spots – no marks, no bites and seen 1 fish caught.
